Productivity – How to work smarter, not harder

February 23, 2021 / BY / IN Accounting, Business, Business advisory, Lifestyle

Many of us have grown up with the ingrained mantra that working harder equates to more success. And while there’s no denying the importance of hard work, the reality is that in order to function at your peak you need to make time to do the things that set you on fire. Emma Scott and Jodie de Vries outline some top tips on how to work smarter, thanks to the Flying Solo website.

1. Plan, plan and plan some more

Take an hour every Sunday to plan out your week, and make sure you aren’t just including work meetings and appointments. Book in some time for the things that let you recharge – a swim in the ocean, walking the dog, a round of golf – because if they’re on your schedule you’re more likely to follow through with them.

2. Focus on the goals that generate the highest income

Make a specific list of goals that will generate income – one example might be to gain 3 new clients a month. Once you have established your goals, outline the specific actions you will need to take to reach each goal, then schedule those actions into your calendar and make them happen. Consciously design your weeks so your most productive timeframes are devoted to the actions that generate income.

3. Stick to your schedule

Enough said, really! Don’t let outside distractions take you off task. Make the separation between work time and down time clear, which is particularly important if you’re working from home. Be as efficient and effective as you can in your work time so that work doesn’t creep into your ‘you time’.

4. Take inspiration from great mentors and continue learning

Learn from successful people. Follow them on social media, watch their videos and listen to their podcasts. Challenge yourself to spend 30 minutes a day reading something positive that will expand your mind and enhance your skill set. There is always something to learn and someone to learn from.
